This family group has its origins in Marske in the North Riding of Yorkshire and specifically around Leyburn and Middleham in the Yorkshire Dales. The earliest ancestor that I’ve found so far is William Sarginson (died 1780) and this is the Descendants of William SarginsonMiddlehamandbeyond report. The most prevalent surname variant is Sarginson with a particular family branch of Sargesons starting with George Sargeson (1854-1924) who was a miner living in Eckington, Derbyshire.

Over time the family migrated to other parts of the UK. George Sargeson’s father John Sarginson (1802-1854) was born in Richmond, North Riding of Yorkshire and by the 1851 census he was a groom working at Renishaw Hall which is still owned by the Sitwell family. Other family members moved to Cheshire, including William Thomas Sarginson (1854-1932) who by 1901 was living in Altringham with his family.  In 1911 he gave his occupation as confectioner.

One more family of interest is that headed by Thomas Scarr Sarginson (1853-1925) who by 1881 was recorded as a cotton weaver living in Great Marsden near Nelson in Lancashire. A place where a great deal of cotton spinning and manufacturing was carried out in the 19^th and early 20^th centuries. One of his sons, James Metcalfe Sarginson (1884-1950) , gave his occupation as a cotton mill engineer on the 1939 register.
