Although I’ve named this the Hotham family tree, the earliest ancestor I’ve been able to trace was Isaac Sergeson (1717-1770), who was born in North Ferriby; his occupation is recorded as a labourer on a number of his children’s baptism records. This is the Descendant Report for Isaac Sergeson. The main surname variants in this family group are Sargeson, Sergeson and Serjeantson.

Isaac and his wife Ann (1722-1784) probably had at least eight children, although it is possible that the last two I’ve found are not theirs. Only one of their sons seems to have lived beyond the age of 10: Robert Sergeson (1749-1783). Robert married Mary Moment (1759-1821) on 16 January 1776 in Hotham in the East Riding of Yorkshire. After Robert’s death Mary married William Stather on 27 December 1796 in Hotham. However, before that date, a child called George Sergeson (1786-1864) was baptised in Hotham on 14 May 1786. His mother was Mary Serjeantson, widow, and William Stather (1742-1807, a carpenter). George was given his mother’s surname as the couple were not married but, his father was recorded as William Stather.

George Sergeson (1786-1864) lived in Hotham where he was described as a master carpenter in the 1834 electoral roll for Hotham. His son George William Sargeson (1836-1895) also became a carpenter. By the 1891 census he was the Inn Keeper for the Hotham Arms; he was also described as the victualler for the Hotham Arms in the 1892 Post Office directory of trades. After his death his son William (1866-1915) continued to run the Inn with his wife Margaret Bilton (1869—1952). After his death it looks like his widow Margaret continued to run the Inn with their son Frederick William (1894-1955). They were still there when the 1939 register was taken; I would like to know though when they stopped running it.
